(Enzal Ya Gamil)

Originally sung by Walid Tawfik

Happy birthday to you...

*Enzal ya gamil fi el saha
Come in, oh beautiful, to the playground
waetmakhtar keda bil raha
and dance (literally: gallob) slowly.
Da ana ad 'ainek
I match your eyes
ma' en nazret 'ainek dabaha
even to the lethal look in your eyes.
Malak ta'la fi el a'li
Why are you so distant (literally: high)?
Ya mali albi layali
You fill my heart every night.
Amrak ya gamil
At your service, oh beautiful.
Happy birthday to you...

Ya wa'di ala el ayam di
Oh, those days
min grer ma nehes ta'di
they pass quickly without our feeling it.
Takhud aktar ma' betedi
They take more than what they give us
wana waya el ayam wahdi
and I'm against those days alone.
Ya amar el leel
Oh moon of the night!
Ya amar el leel el wardi
Oh moon of the beautiful night
shawer lel negma tahadi
if you point at the stars, they will slow down
amrak ya gamil
at your service, oh beautiful.
Happy birthday to you...
repeat from *

Ya rabia el helm el akhdar
Oh spring, the dream of the green
en kan 'alsabr rah asbur
if it's only about patience I'll be patien.
Had gilak wehtah albak
It will come to you and open your heart
el donya hatisghar gambak
then the world will be small compared to you.
Ya bahr maloush
Oh sea without
Ya bahr maloush nehaya
Oh sea without an end
albi mallah wahikaya
my heart is like a sailor
amrak ya gamil
at your service, oh beautiful.
Happy birthday to you...

I'm very grateful for all my friends, who helped me to translate the lyrics of this song. None of my friends is a professional Arabic-English translator: some of them are fluent in Arabic, some in English and a few - my self included - have some skill in both languages. It's often quite challenging to express both the idea and the literal meaning of the lyrics in a few words, as I consider it most useful to dancers that the translation include both these aspects.
