Law Sa'alouk

If They Ask You

Helm El Raqs CD

Music from Outi presents Helm El Raqs
Oriental Dance Music vol. 2

Orginally sung by Warda

*wala yasab 'alena, 'alena
nothing is difficult for us, for us
illa el furaq ya 'aineena, ya 'aineena, ya habibi
except separtion oh our eyes, oh our eyes, oh my love

ayam 'alena ta'di, ta'di watmur zai es sahab
our days are going, going passing like the clouds
allah, allah y'awad 'aleena, 'aleena
oh God, God have mercy on us, on us
wigazi, wigazi el ayam
and punish, punish the days

law sa'alouk, ya habibi, ya habibi
if they ask you, oh my darling, oh my darling
'anni w'an hawaya, law sa'alouk
about me and my love, if they ask you
law sa'alouk
if they ask you
matulshi ya habibi ennak z'alan m'aya
don't say, oh my darling, you are angry with me
law sa'alouk
if they ask you

**wa ya'az 'aleya el 'ashrah y'anaya
and the companionship gives me pain, my eyes
wa kalam el nas 'alena witagrehum feya
and the talk of the people about us hurts me

wa dari
and conceal
dari 'al garah
conceal the wounds
zai mabetdary, ya habibi
like you conceal, oh my love
'ala el hob wil afrah
the love and happiness

wikfaya ya ghali
it' enough, oh my precious
sabrak garh layali
your patience wounds the nights
kifaya
it's enough
le tishamit 'azali feya
why do you make other people rejoice in my misfortune
wa fi elli garali kifaya, kifaya
and what happened to me, it's enough, it's enough
continue *

law satfuk sahabi
if you come across my friends
sa'alouk 'aleya
if they ask about me
matulsh hagar
don't say, he deserted me
witshamithum feya
and make them rejoice

law satfuk aw sa'alouk, sa'alouk 'aleya
if you come across or they ask you, they ask you about me
matulshi hagar
don't say, he deserted me
witshammithum feya
and make them rejoice

yigu, yigu yizuruni
they come, they come to visit me
annak yisaluni, annak yisaluni
they ask me about you, they ask about you
askot wil dimua min herti yikhununi
I'm silent but the tears from my confusion betray me

yalli inta habibi la, la, la
you are my darling no, no, no
la ablak habibi wala b'adak habibi
none before you my darling or after you my darling
continue **

I'm very grateful for all my friends, who helped me to translate the lyrics of this song. None of my friends is a professional Arabic-English translator: some of them are fluent in Arabic, some in English and a few - my self included - have some skill in both languages. It's often quite challenging to express both the idea and the literal meaning of the lyrics in a few words, as I consider it most useful to dancers that the translation include both these aspects.
